Tips and tricks for launch

Launch is approaching quickly and soon many boaters will be excitedly preparing their boats to hit the water. Here are some tips and tricks to help you have a successful launch day.

  1. Save the date

A boat owner or desinate must be there. If you cannot be present on launch day, please notify the harbourmaster of your assigned designate. If you are assigned to a crew - be on time.

2. Dispose of your shrink wrap

If you have a shrink wrapped boat and will not be reusing the shrink wrap, you will need to take the shrink wrap for disposal or recycling. The club garbage bin can't handle to be filled with it.

3. Be a good neighbour

When working on your boat be mindful of how it may affect your neighbours. Any heavy sanding requires you to tent off the area under your boat both to protect your neighbour and the environment.

4. Run your engine and dispose of the antifreeze

Get the antifreeze out of your engine before launch and dispose of it properly. Catch the used antifreeze in a bucket and dispose of it in the basin marked for antifreeze on the east side of the workshop.

If you have engine issues and will need a tow at launch - notify the Harbour Master early!

5. Paint lines for a smooth landing

Paint a vertical line from your keel to your cradle before launch. This will make landing your boat at haul out easier. One on each side is a good idea.

6. Cradle markings

Cradles should be clearly marked with your member number and bow/stern. There is an example in the workshop (by the stairs) of how cradles should be marked for bow and stern with green, orange and member number. Also mark your cradle pads with you name and member number.

7. Clear your cradle

A clean workspace is a safe workspace. Clear the area under and around your boat. Remove ladders, fenders, equipment, and debris.

8. Clear the decks for safety!

Ensure anchors, booms, boathooks, etc. are all removed from your decks and stowed. No loose items.

9. Stow fenders and dock lines

Have the fenders and dock lines that you will need ready but stowed until your boat is in the water. Put them somewhere easy to retrieve them before you get to your dock.
